THE INTERVIEW

From Taiwan’s bustling streets to the pulsating rhythm of America, Stacy Huang’s journey is a testament to the power of dreams and determination. This vibrant journey finds its artistic parallel in Stacy’s recent photoshoot at Nile’s Flying A, captured by Paul Tocatlian. In Stacy’s journey, from a little girl in Taiwan to an entrepreneur in the U.S., her belief in herself stands out like a beacon of resilience, inspiring many to follow in her footsteps. She truly epitomizes the phrase, “The world is your oyster.” Join us for an intimate chat with Stacy as she unfolds the intriguing narrative of her life and career.

Can you share with us your early life experiences in Taiwan and how they have shaped your career today?

Absolutely, I had quite an unconventional upbringing in Taiwan. I faced a lot of adversity growing up, which in hindsight, taught me about resilience and adaptability. I was often tasked with taking care of my younger siblings while juggling work and school, all in the face of societal challenges and personal hurdles.

These experiences played a significant role in shaping my character and my worldview. I learned early on to adapt to different situations and to face challenges head-on, skills that are vital in the ever-changing world of modeling and acting. It was these experiences that also gave me the courage to move to the United States when I was 23, despite not being fluent in English. I saw it as a step towards a life where I was in control of my own destiny, and it laid the groundwork for my subsequent achievements.

You started your own brand, Westea, before moving into modeling. How has this entrepreneurial journey influenced your career in modeling and acting?

Starting Westea was a venture that came from my deep-seated desire to create something of my own. It was a journey that required resilience, discipline, and a lot of hard work. Despite the brand eventually closing due to personal reasons, I believe it was these lessons that prepared me for my career in modeling and acting, where rejection can often be more common than acceptance.

Through my entrepreneurial journey, I learned to see failure not as an end, but as a stepping stone toward success. This mindset has helped me to keep striving, to keep improving, and to never give up, no matter how challenging the circumstances. It’s this resilience that I bring to every photoshoot, every audition, and every role I undertake.

You’re starting to make a mark in the modeling industry. What’s your approach to selecting the right photographer for a project?

Choosing the right photographer is crucial for a successful project. Every photographer has a unique style and approach, and it’s important to find one that aligns with the vision of the project. I thoroughly examine a photographer’s portfolio to understand their approach and to see if their style resonates with the theme of the project.

A prime example of an excellent collaborative partnership is with Paul Tocatilan from Kisau Photography. Paul’s unique style and artistic vision align well with my aspirations in modeling. He has a knack for capturing not only the physical aspect of a shoot but also the underlying emotions and subtleties, making our projects together truly fulfilling. It’s not just about clicking the camera but the entire journey of creating and telling a story, and Paul excels in this. Building such relationships where there’s mutual respect and understanding is key to bringing out the best in each shoot.

How have your life experiences influenced your work as a model and actress?

My life experiences have greatly influenced my work as a model and actress. The adversity I faced early in life, my entrepreneurial journey, and my exposure to different cultures and lifestyles have all contributed to my versatility and adaptability as a model and actress.

These experiences have given me a deep well of emotional resonance that I can draw from for my roles. It’s not just about looking the part but living it too, and every experience I’ve had has contributed to my ability to do this authentically.

What advice would you give to young girls, single ladies, or mature women who aspire to follow a path similar to yours?

I would tell them that it is never too late to take the first step toward achieving their dreams, no matter how difficult the road may be. We are the ones in control of our lives, and nobody will fight for our dreams as fiercely as we will. I’m a prime example of overcoming obstacles and exceeding all odds to get where I want to be.

My journey hasn’t been straightforward, but every experience, every obstacle I’ve overcome, and every success I’ve achieved has shaped me into who I am today. So, don’t be afraid of the journey. Embrace it, learn from it, and let it shape you into the person you want to become.

THE INTERVIEW

Hannah Do, as someone who works both in front of and behind the camera as a model and wardrobe stylist, respectively, how do you feel these two roles interact and influence each other in your work?

My dual roles as a model and a wardrobe stylist really do influence each other in several ways. For example, having spent hours in front of the camera as a model, I’m acutely aware of the significance of the clothes I’m wearing. I need to not only look good in them, but also feel confident, comfortable, and able to move freely. These considerations profoundly inform my decisions when I’m choosing outfits for other models. Conversely, working as a stylist has equipped me with an in-depth understanding of elements like silhouettes, color theories, fabric behavior, and what visually translates well on camera. This knowledge is incredibly valuable when I’m modeling, as I’m able to make choices that best suit the garments I’m wearing, the mood of the shoot, and the vision of the photographer.

In what ways has your personal experience as a model influenced the choices you make when curating pieces for the Kisau Clothing Collection? And conversely, how has curating this collection refined your approach to modeling?

When curating pieces for the Kisau Clothing Collection (www.kisau.com), my personal experiences as a model play an important role. I understand firsthand what it’s like to be in front of the camera wearing clothes that are visually striking but uncomfortable or impractical. Therefore, I consciously choose pieces that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also comfortable and functional for the models who will be wearing them during long shoots. On the other hand, being a curator has refined my approach to modeling by broadening my understanding of different styles and their impact on the overall aesthetics of a photoshoot. It’s like seeing the world of fashion from two different lenses – one is all about the individual in the clothes, and the other is about how the clothes create an atmosphere and tell a story. The synergy of these dual perspectives enables me to adapt more quickly to various photoshoot requirements, understand the designer’s vision more accurately, and convey it more authentically through my modeling.

Belamour Bijoux by Miae Nelson is known for its distinctive and stylish art fashion jewelry designs. As a spokesperson, how do you feel your background in styling helps you to represent this brand more effectively?

Representing Belamour Bijoux by Miae Nelson is indeed an honor and a privilege. I see every piece of her jewelry as a work of art with its own character and message. With my background in styling, I have a good understanding of how accessories can enhance an outfit, highlight specific features, or communicate a particular mood. This insight allows me to showcase and talk about the unique qualities of Belamour Bijoux’s pieces in a way that is more meaningful and relatable to potential customers.

Your work at Kisau Photograph and Belamour Bijoux has placed you in unique positions to influence fashion and styling. What common threads do you see between modeling and wardrobe styling that might not be apparent to the general public?

The common thread I see between modeling and wardrobe styling is the art of visual storytelling. Both trades require more than just a keen eye for beauty – they need an understanding of how various elements interact to create a compelling narrative. Modeling is much more than just striking a pose – it involves embodying a character, conveying a mood, or telling a story through body language and expressions. Similarly, styling is more than just arranging clothes. It involves carefully selecting and coordinating pieces to create a look that communicates the desired story or mood. My dual roles have given me a unique, 360-degree understanding of this narrative aspect in fashion, which, I believe, adds a layer of depth and sophistication to my work.

In your modeling and styling work, you must frequently transition between different styles and aesthetics. How does your dual role help you manage these transitions, and has it influenced your versatility or ability to adopt various looks and styles?

The constant need to adapt and evolve in both modeling and styling is indeed a challenge, but it’s one of the aspects I love most about my work. My experiences as a model have made me more flexible and open to various styles and aesthetics, while my work as a stylist has given me a deeper understanding of fashion trends and the art of combining different elements to create unique looks. This symbiotic relationship between the two roles makes me more dynamic and creative, regardless of whether I’m styling for a shoot or modeling for one. This dual perspective has also enriched my appreciation of fashion’s diversity, encouraging me to continuously explore and experiment with a wider range of looks and styles, ensuring that my work remains fresh, innovative, and ahead of the curve.

THE ARTICLE

Embarking on a creative journey as a photographer is always filled with excitement, especially when collaborating with talent like Meera, an experienced model, and actress. This artistic endeavor led us to the charming Place Vendome in Paris, which served as the stunning backdrop for our photoshoot.

The journey began with us brainstorming a narrative, intricately interlacing our chosen theme and mood with the very essence of Place Vendome. This creative exchange of ideas formed the cornerstone of our project.

A critical component of this narrative was wardrobe selection. With her astute sense of style, Meera chose a single outfit from the Kisau Clothing Collection, curated by Hannah Do, which became the keystone in the architectural design of our photoshoot.

Under the ethereal afternoon glow of Place Vendome, Meera, elegantly attired, worked her magic in front of the lens. The photoshoot lasted around three hours, with each pose meticulously orchestrated to ensure authenticity and continuity in our shared vision.

The creative collaboration didn’t end with the shoot. Together, we sifted through the images, handpicking those that best depicted our narrative. These were then subtly retouched to enhance their aesthetic appeal.

The fruits of our collaborative effort are reflected in this very publication. Each image serves as a testament to our creative journey, a narrative which, while anchored in Place Vendome, will hopefully resonate with readers globally, highlighting the impact of a well-executed visual narrative.

Violinist: Bartu Elci-Ozsoy

Bartu Elci-Ozsoy is an extraordinary human being that is needed at a time when we need people to do special things. The immense gifts that he has for creating music, playing and conducting is a treasure trove that symbolizes the great capacity of the human experience …” – Wayne Shorter, winner of 11 Grammy & Lifetime Achievement Awards

Gifted with perfect pitch, Bartu had showed signs of great interest in classical music at a very young age. His talent was discovered at the age of 3 when he was heard singing the entire Pastoral Symphony of Beethoven by heart and in tune. He deliberately chose to play the violin at the age of 4 and said in his first lesson that he wanted to “start playing baroque pieces”.

Bartu has so far given numerous concerts and recitals and conducted orchestras. He has also participated in violin and conducting masterclasses of renowned musicians worldwide, and studied piano, harmony, musical writing, counterpoint and improvisation with leading professors.

A socially engaged musician, Bartu has been implementing solidarity projects since the outbreak of COVID- 19. He developed and led virtual collaboration projects with artists from different countries to share solidarity messages through music and produced videos to raise funds for ‘Médecins du Monde’ (“Doctors of the World”) to help the most vulnerable.

“Bartu is one of those exceptional talents who make us meditate on the infinitely mysterious powers of music … A prodigy, he moves us by a kind of ageless wisdom and by his way of appropriating quite naturally the highest human aspirations. It is certainly this capacity to gather all his being in his art, cultivated every day like a vital and holy thing, which strikes immediately with the listening of Bartu.” – Alexis Galpérine, professor, Paris Conservatoire
