EYE SEE YOU: Harry Williams’ San Francisco Street Photography Photobook

EYE SEE YOU: Harry Williams' San Francisco Street Photography Photobook

How do you capture the soul of a city through its people? Harry Williams, a street photographer with an extraordinary ability to see beyond the surface, delves into this question with his photobook, EYE SEE YOU. This heartfelt collection of black-and-white portraits captures the essence of San Francisco’s residents. Each image tells a deeply personal story, celebrating individuality while reminding us of the connections that unite us all.

How It All Started

Harry Williams‘ journey into photography began in rural Ohio, where he grew up as the only brown person in his small town. It wasn’t always easy, but those experiences shaped his ability to see people for who they truly are. After graduating from Ohio State University with a degree in photography, he sold nearly everything he owned and embarked on a transformative trip to Southeast Asia. Armed with a single manual film camera, Harry immersed himself in street photography, capturing raw, unfiltered moments in places like Bangkok. He spent time with the Black Hmong community in Northern Vietnam, learning how to use his camera as a bridge to connect with strangers. These experiences taught him that photography isn’t just about taking pictures. It’s about discovering and sharing stories.

San Francisco: A City of Stories

In 2017, Harry turned his focus to San Francisco. He has spent years documenting life in neighborhoods like the Tenderloin and Sixth Street, areas brimming with resilience, energy, and untold stories. What makes Harry’s work so special is his approach: he doesn’t just snap photos and walk away. He takes time to get to know the people he photographs, often returning to share prints with them. This simple yet powerful act of connection has made him a trusted and beloved figure in these communities.

The Meaning Behind EYE SEE YOU

EYE SEE YOU isn’t just a book of photos. It’s an invitation to look deeper. The black-and-white images strip away distractions, focusing on the emotions etched into every face and the textures that tell untold stories. Harry uses a 28mm lens, which requires him to get up close and personal with his subjects. This creates an incredible sense of intimacy in his work, pulling viewers right into the moment. Each portrait challenges us to see not just a face, but a person. Their strength, struggles, and humanity.

What Harry Shared at the Commonwealth Club

In December 2024, Harry spoke at the Commonwealth Club about his photography and the philosophy behind it. For him, it’s all about connection. His goal is to honor the people he photographs, to show their dignity and humanity, and to spark empathy in those who see his work. During the talk, he shared stories about photographing residents of the Tenderloin and how his portraits have helped people feel seen and valued in ways they hadn’t before. He also opened up about the emotional challenges of his work and the support he receives from his partner, Angela. It was a conversation as raw and honest as his photos.

Highlights from the Book

The portraits in EYE SEE YOU are unforgettable. One striking photo features “Kissey-Face,” a man grinning behind a birthday cake, his joy lighting up the image. Another captures “Buffalo $mooth,” exuding quiet pride and resilience. These are moments frozen in time, showing the strength and spirit of San Francisco’s residents. Through these images, Harry brings us face-to-face with people who are often overlooked, asking us to see them as they are. Full of life, complexity, and humanity.

Making a Difference Beyond the Photos

Harry’s impact goes beyond his photobook. Some of his portraits have been turned into murals in public spaces, like the corner of Jones and Ellis Streets in the Tenderloin. These large-scale artworks have become a source of pride for the community, giving people a chance to see themselves celebrated. Through his work, Harry invites us to rethink how we view others and encourages us to connect on a deeper level.

EYE SEE YOU has received glowing reviews for its emotional depth and artistic brilliance. The San Francisco Public Library described it as “a collection of street photography, including vivid portraits, hands, street scenes of San Francisco.” Critics and viewers alike have been moved by Harry’s ability to capture raw, real moments that resonate deeply.
