THE INTERVIEW
Jing, how has your passion for modeling influenced your collaborations with Paul and Sarah to vividly capture the essence of fashion?
My lifelong dream of modeling has driven me to deeply engage with every project. I believe each clothing design carries a unique soul, which I strive to express. During our recent shoot at Mission San Juan Capistrano with Paul Tocatlian, I wore a stunning gown paired innovatively with sleek swimwear underneath, showcasing a unique blend of historic elegance and modern flair. Sarah Lee crafted a complementary hairstyle that elegantly harmonized with the overall look, adding an extra layer of sophistication. This approach helped bring the story of the ensemble to life, reflecting its spirit through the rustic backdrop and intricate details captured in each shot.
Jing, how have your experiences in LA, on the runway, and in photoshoots enriched your modeling career and your mentorship of emerging talent?
Modeling in LA, with its vast opportunities spanning runway, commercial, and editorial photoshoots, has been incredibly rewarding. Experiences like our recent shoot at the mission have been particularly enriching. This location provided a unique backdrop that perfectly complemented the contemporary designs I modeled. Having a diverse background in various types of photoshoots has honed my ability to adapt my expressions and poses to different settings. Moreover, these experiences have deepened my commitment to giving back through coaching and mentoring. I teach aspiring models how to effectively capture and communicate the essence of each unique design and setting, enriching their understanding and skills in the fashion industry.
Jing, what does collaboration mean to you in the context of a photoshoot?
Collaboration in a photoshoot is about combining creative strengths to tell a compelling visual story. At our mission shoot, I worked closely with Paul and Sarah. Paul captured the intricate designs of Scott Braxton and Ultease, while Sarah enhanced the looks with her hair and makeup artistry. I suggested the historic location to align with the timeless yet modern appeal of our theme. Together, our collaborative efforts enriched the shoot, blending talents to produce images that resonated beautifully with our theme.
Jing, how does pairing high fashion with swimwear in your outfit enhance the narrative of the photoshoot at Mission San Juan Capistrano?
Pairing high fashion with swimwear for our photoshoot added layers to the story we told, mixing resilience with elegance. My gown, designed by Scott Braxton, was dripping with sequined opulence. Underneath, the swimwear by Ultease peeked through, injecting a modern, versatile twist. This bold mix symbolized a seamless fusion of past and present styles. As we navigated the historic mission, the lavish gown contrasted sharply against the rugged, age-old walls, sparking a visual conversation between enduring heritage and bold, contemporary design. This shoot was about blending these worlds, showing that modern style can beautifully coexist with historical elements, enriching both the narrative and the visuals of our project.
Paul, could you explain how location diversity shapes your projects?
The shoot with Jing at the mission set the tone for a week of diverse and inspiring settings. The historic backdrop added a layer of depth and narrative richness that’s essential for storytelling in photography. My shoots at other locations offered contrasting atmospheres. Urban sophistication and serene, natural settings. Each location brings out different aspects of the subjects and the fashion, enabling me to craft a broad range of visual stories. This diversity in locations not only challenges me creatively but also enhances the dynamic range of my portfolio, reflecting the versatility required in contemporary photography.
