Sometimes, art is found in the most unexpected places. This was the case when I teamed up with dancer and graphic designer Andy Trung Nguyen for a one-of-a-kind photoshoot in the heart of San Jose. Set against the raw, industrial backdrops of concrete walls and an underground parking garage, Andy redefined movement, turning this urban setting into a canvas for his artistry. The result? A series of breathtaking images that have now been featured in the inaugural issue of COPIED Magazine, presented by The Next Bay Area Runway.
A Symphony of Motion
When I first discovered this location, I was struck by its stark, geometric beauty. The subdued grays of the concrete and the interplay of light filtering through the space were both minimalistic and powerful. This was not your typical stage for a ballet dancer. Yet, when Andy stepped into the frame, his sinuous, fluid movements transformed the environment. His body became a symphony of motion, weaving through the rigid lines and sharp angles with effortless grace.
Each photograph captured a moment of duality. Andy’s strength and delicacy against the concrete backdrop. His poses, whether mid-leap or in quiet stillness, told a story of resilience and creativity, proving that even the most overlooked spaces can become platforms for beauty.
Andy Nguyen: Redefining Dance in an Urban Landscape
Andy’s journey as a dancer and artist is inspiring. He began ballet at the age of 13 and refined his craft as a studio company artist at New Ballet San Jose. Now a freelancer, Andy combines his skills in dance and graphic design to push boundaries, exploring where art belongs and how it can evolve.
In the words of COPIED Magazine, “Captured through the lens of photographer Paul Tocatlian, Andy’s movement brings new energy to raw, minimalist backdrops. The rigid lines of concrete and metal set the scene for Andy’s graceful, powerful form.” This photoshoot was a blend of fashion, narrative, and performance art, celebrating how traditional techniques like ballet can thrive in contemporary, unexpected settings.
Inspirations That Move the World
Andy’s work is deeply influenced by dancers who embody strength and elegance. He cites Chloe Misseldine and Marny Trounson as two pivotal figures who shaped his style, blending classical technique with modern adaptability. One of his favorite choreographies, Safar khosh by Keon Saghari, mirrors his artistic philosophy: constant movement and transformation.
I wanted the photographs to reflect Andy’s spirit of evolution. His ability to adapt and bring life to any space he inhabits. The interplay of his minimalist outfit with the raw textures of the concrete setting emphasized his movements, drawing attention to his fluidity. From stretching skyward to balancing on a single foot, every pose captured his unique ability to turn industrial harshness into poetic art.
Creative Collaboration at Its Best
What made this project truly special was the collaboration between Andy and me. As a photographer, I aim to do more than just freeze moments in time. I strive to tell stories. With Andy, every pose and movement carried an energy that resonated deeply. Shadows and lines became extensions of his expressions, creating visuals that felt both grounded and ethereal.
As COPIED Magazine describes it, “Paul’s lens captures more than just Andy’s movement. It captures the energy and story behind each pose.” The photoshoot reminded me of the power of teamwork in creating something extraordinary, blending Andy’s strength and grace with my vision for the setting.
