Photos That Didn’t Make The Cut

We know you’re wondering about the photos that didn’t make it into the book! We’ll be adding a curated mix here over time, so keep checking back for more hidden gems. Stay tuned!

Vinccie Chow Sets the Stage for This Chapter

“Secrets, like shadows, bewilder in the dark. I am vaguely bewitched, and yet I am not. I live in the light but carry my shadow without it conquering me. Danger beneath the darkness isn’t an illusion, but fear is a choice. I do not deny my shadows because I am in the light. I allowed my inner darkness and light to peacefully coexist as radiance, for I could not shake off the shadows. When I understood and accepted my shadow self, it gave me dimension and depth, just as stars cannot shine without darkness. I embraced my duality and became INVINCCIEBLE. Fear not, for shining through your brightest light is being who you truly are.”
Vinccie Chow

Vinccie Chow’s poetic reflection beautifully sets the tone for “The Dark Side.” Her words resonate deeply with the theme of this chapter, celebrating duality, depth, and the interplay of light and shadow. Her clever play on words combines “invincible” with her name to create “INVINCCIEBLE,” showcasing her creative spirit and her courage to embrace authenticity.

Vinccie is more than just a collaborator. She is a good friend who has joined me on a number of creative journeys. Her photos appear in several chapters of this book, including Chapter 2: Chiaroscuro, Chapter 7: Strike a Pose, and Chapter 12: Graffiti Lane. She was also part of unforgettable city walks, such as when I photographed Jay in Chapter 10: City Lights. Additionally, she took part in the  Palais Palais photoshoot, leaving her unique mark on each project.

Our first collaboration, inspired by Mulan, featured a striking red dress and veil. This initial project set the tone for the creative adventures that followed. Vinccie’s ability to bring depth and emotion to every frame makes her an essential part of both this chapter and the broader narrative of this book.

In “The Dark Side,” her presence captures the essence of duality. Her quote reflects on fear, shadows, and resilience, weaving seamlessly into the chapter’s narrative. It reminds us that true power comes from accepting our complexities and finding beauty in the balance between light and dark.

Embracing the Darkness

Photography is often described as the art of capturing light. However, “The Dark Side” reveals an equally compelling truth. There is profound beauty in capturing darkness. This chapter celebrates the interplay of mood, tone, and atmosphere.

Darkness in photography is not merely the absence of light. It is an emotional and aesthetic choice. It reflects a person’s mood and conveys subtle intensity, quiet power, softness, and strength. It defines the tone of their outfit and sets the atmosphere of the shoot location. Together, these elements create a sense of depth and intrigue that draws you in.

Take Lana, The Punk Princess, for example. Her portrait was captured in front of a closed restaurant in an empty St. Collins Lane shopping mall during the pandemic. It was the first shot of our session and remains one of my favorites. Her intense gaze and striking look contrast beautifully with her warm, bubbly personality off-camera. This embodies the duality at the heart of this chapter.

Similarly, the portraits of Vinccie Chow and Bazelika Nyan Akujc were taken in the abandoned lobby of the Grand Hyatt. These were shot on separate occasions. Revisiting the same location allowed me to explore new perspectives and create distinct images each time. Bazelika’s session was particularly memorable. She arrived without an outfit, assuming I would provide one. What could have been a setback turned into an opportunity for improvisation. With her stylish scarf and corset, we crafted a look that was both personal and captivating.

Then there is Pickup Josh, whose shoot was nothing short of a visual thriller. He is featured in Chapter 1: The Street Is My Studio, where he was captured smoking on a staircase at Degraves Street. In this chapter, Josh took on a completely different mood and outfit. Hanging off the Sandridge Bridge, his portrait exudes a quiet intensity that perfectly complements the theme of “The Dark Side.”

Every photo in this chapter carries its own story. They are not just images but narratives that invite you to look beyond the surface and connect with the emotions and moments they reveal. Through the lens, “The Dark Side” becomes a testament to the beauty and power of embracing all aspects of ourselves. This includes light, dark, and everything in between.
