If you think photographers only started editing their photographs when Photoshop and Lightroom arrived, spend a minute looking at the original print comparison reproduced in this article.

On the right is Thomas Hoepker’s celebrated 1966 portrait of Muhammad Ali in Chicago. Ali’s fist fills the foreground, enormous and sharply textured, while his face and body recede into softness behind it. Leica’s account places the encounter during training, when Ali briefly faced the camera at close range.

On the left is a working print of the same photograph, covered with circles, lines, numbers, and handwritten instructions. The marks reveal something we normally never get to see: part of the process used to turn a negative into a finished print. They are a record of decisions, rather than damage to the photograph.

For anyone who works with digital photography today, those marks should look surprisingly familiar. They belong to the darkroom, but the thinking behind them is very close to what many of us now do in Lightroom.

The Photographic Edit Did Not Begin With Digital

There is a romantic idea about film photography that I still hear surprisingly often. You loaded film into a camera, took a photograph, developed the negative, made a print, and that was that. In this version of history, editing arrived with the computer.

The exposure made in the camera was only one stage of the process. Once a negative entered the darkroom, the photographer or printer could make a long series of decisions about how that negative should become a finished photograph. Exposure could change. Contrast could change. Particular areas could be made lighter or darker. The image could be cropped. Different parts of the frame could receive different amounts of light. Several test prints might be made before the photographer arrived at the version that felt right.

The negative contained the photographic information, but the print was an interpretation of that information.

Ansel Adams compared the negative to a musical score and the print to its performance. Barbara Isenberg recalls his analogy in the Los Angeles Times.

Look Closely at the Ali Print

The comparison makes the connection easy to see. Magnum describes these darkroom annotations as records of dodging, burning, exposure times, and contrast grades. Its Darkroom Prints are facsimiles of working prints, preserving marks that would ordinarily be absent from the finished photograph.

Hoepker made the photograph in 1966. That date does not date the annotations. Pablo Inirio, the Magnum master printer associated with this work print, joined the agency in 1992, as DPReview’s account of his career records. The exact date of this annotated print is not established by the supplied comparison.

I find that distinction particularly interesting. A photograph could be revisited decades after the shutter fired, with its recorded moment becoming the starting point for another interpretation in print.

In Magnum’s interview with Inirio, the printer describes working alongside Hoepker to give Ali’s fist a gritty, strongly textured appearance while keeping the background softer and more muted. Hoepker brought examples of earlier prints, and they experimented toward the result he wanted.

The photograph’s power begins with the encounter, the camera position, the perspective, and the moment of exposure. Printing then shapes how the recorded tones meet the viewer’s eye.

This comparison is not a controlled demonstration of an untouched negative beside a final edit. The marked version is already a print. Reproduction, scanning, and display can also affect what we see here. The useful evidence is the documented printing process, not an attempt to calculate every change from these two reproductions.

Dodging and Burning Were Local Adjustments

In traditional black-and-white negative printing, an enlarger projects light through the negative onto photographic paper. Within the paper’s working range, more exposure generally produces a darker tone after development. The printer does not have to expose the entire sheet equally.

To dodge an area, the printer holds back some light so that part of the print becomes lighter. To burn an area, the printer gives it extra exposure so it becomes darker. Ilford’s printing guide describes using hands or pieces of card to control selected regions.

The physical tools could be remarkably simple. A small piece of card attached to a wire might be moved through the beam of light. The printer’s hands could also be used. The sophistication was not necessarily in the tool itself. It was in knowing where to intervene, for how long, and how gradually to blend the adjustment into the rest of the print.

Paint over an area with the Brush tool. Create a radial mask or a linear gradient. Increase Exposure somewhere and decrease it somewhere else. Adobe’s Lightroom masking guide explicitly connects local Exposure adjustments with traditional dodging and burning. Other local controls let us work with contrast, highlights, shadows, texture, and clarity.

The physical process has changed completely. The photographic intention often has not.

When I look at the circles, outlines, and notes on the Ali print as someone who works digitally, I see different regions receiving different treatments. Conceptually, I see masks.

A printer might outline part of a working print and note that it needs additional exposure. In Lightroom, I might mask that region and lower Exposure to darken it. The exposure directions are reversed because one control affects light reaching photographic paper and the other affects displayed image brightness. The aim can still be similar.

The notes also preserve a recipe. In Hoepker’s 2014 Leica interview, he describes Pablo marking proof prints so he could repeat the result. Lightroom’s saved adjustments serve a comparable purpose when I return to an image and inspect its masks, crop, and tonal decisions. A digital setting and a handwritten printing instruction are different things, but both make a decision traceable.

The questions remain remarkably similar. What should be lighter? What should be darker? Where should the contrast increase? Where should it soften? What should draw the viewer’s eye first? What should quietly recede?

Those questions belong to photography across both processes.

Editing Is Not the Same as Fabricating

Discussions about editing often become arguments about authenticity, especially now that generative tools can create, remove, or replace visual content. It helps to be precise about what an edit actually does.

Film photography also had techniques for substantial manipulation, including combining negatives and altering physical prints. Its history is not a guarantee of neutrality. What makes this Hoepker example useful is the way it reveals interpretation through printing.

Darkening the recorded fist or increasing its contrast is a different intervention from replacing it with another fist. But tonal changes and cropping can still conceal information, exaggerate an impression, or remove essential context. Keeping the original objects in the frame does not automatically make every edit an honest one.

For me, the useful questions are what changed, why it changed, and what the viewer is being invited to believe. A fashion image, a personal artwork, and a news photograph can carry different expectations. The existence of darkroom techniques does not settle every question about acceptable editing today.

I can adjust a RAW photograph while continuing to work with the scene the camera recorded. Tools that add, remove, replace, or synthesize content call for a further conversation about authorship and disclosure. From the Negative to the RAW File

People often describe a RAW file as a digital negative. Technically, they are very different things. A film negative is a physical photographic object produced through a chemical process, while a RAW file contains digital information recorded by a camera sensor. But as a conceptual comparison, there is something useful there.

The comparison has limits. A RAW conversion depends on software interpretation and a rendering pipeline, while a darkroom print depends on film, paper, chemistry, and exposure. Modern automatic masks can isolate a subject or sky with a convenience a cardboard tool cannot offer. Similar intentions do not make the processes technically identical.

Yet underneath all that technology is a much older idea. The moment of capture does not necessarily represent the end of the photographic process.

We tend to encounter famous photographs after every decision has already been made. We see the finished image in a museum, magazine, book, exhibition, or online archive. The choices that shaped the final print are invisible, so it becomes easy to assume that what we are seeing is simply what came out of the camera.

Suddenly, the finished photograph no longer feels inevitable. Someone had to examine a print, decide where its emphasis belonged, change the printing approach, and judge the result again.

That does not feel very different from sitting in front of Lightroom, moving an adjustment, turning it off, turning it back on, refining a mask, adjusting a curve, walking away for a while, returning to the image, and asking whether you have pushed something too far.

The computer made many of these adjustments faster to revisit, compare, and reproduce. It gave us precise, reversible controls without requiring a fresh sheet of photographic paper for each trial.

The Tools Changed. The Questions Remain.

Photography has always involved choices. Where to stand. When to press the shutter. Which frame to select. How to crop it. How bright to make it. How dark. How much contrast to use. What to emphasize. What to hold back.

The unmarked photograph shows us one result. The work print lets us see part of the thinking that went into printing it.

Magnum’s reproduction of the Ali darkroom print makes that usually hidden craft available to look at in its own right.

When I open a RAW photograph and darken part of the frame, brighten another, adjust the contrast around a face, or guide the viewer toward a particular detail, I am obviously using tools photographers in the film era did not have. But the underlying act of interpretation belongs to a much older photographic tradition.

Cardboard and exposure times gave way to masks and slider values in my digital workflow. The underlying habit of looking, adjusting, and looking again remains familiar.

The tools changed, but the photographer is still looking at the photograph and asking essentially the same question:

How should this photograph finally be seen?
